Eclogite is a high-grade metamorphic rock that forms under extreme pressure in subduction zones of the Earth's crust. Its name is derived from the Greek word "eklogē" (selection, the chosen one) - a reference to its extraordinary formation history. Its characteristic appearance shows red garnet inclusions (pyrope-almandine) in a green omphacite matrix, a clinopyroxene. This color combination makes eclogite one of the most striking rocks ever.
