A special feature of iolite is its pronounced pleochroism: depending on the viewing angle, it shows different colors – blue-violet, lavender blue, and yellowish-gray to colorless. This phenomenon made it known to the Vikings as a natural polarizing filter for navigation at sea – hence the name "water sapphire." The Mohs hardness is 7 to 7.5.
